As a group of food enthusiasts, we were thrilled to try several dishes during our visit to The Hainan Story Coffee House. Here are some of our personal favourites:
- Hainanese Ah Mai’s Chee Cheong Fun: This dish surprised us with its delightful combination of fried fish balls, hard-boiled eggs, and fragrant sauces. The chee cheong fun sauce, green chilli sauce, rojak sauce, and light soya sauce provided a perfect blend of flavours, making it an instant hit at our table.
- Hainanese Curry Chicken Rice: This comforting dish offers tender chicken pieces and a rich, flavourful curry sauce. The freshly steamed rice, sambal belacan, seasonal vegetables, and fried egg that accompanied the dish only added to its appeal.
- Lasagne Chwee Kueh: A unique fusion of Hainanese and Italian cuisine, the Baked Hainanese Rice Cake Lasagna was a delightful discovery. The combination of wobbly rice cakes, eggplant tomato stew, sliced cheddar cheese, fine French beans, and bechamel sauce made a memorable dish.
- Hainanese Pork Cutlet: This crispy and juicy pork cutlet, coated with potato chip crumbs and drenched in a lip-smacking BBQ sauce, was an absolute treat. The onion rings, green peas, and diced potatoes on the side complemented the cutlet perfectly.
