Residing in the shop house space formerly occupied by Phat Cat Laundry is the 2-in-1 concept of Bao Makers x Butler’s Steakbar. For unique locally and internationally inspired takes on the humble bao, rice bowls and pasta, hit up Bao Makers from late morning till mid-afternoon. Come sunset, pay the same place a visit for hearty steaks, burgers and some very well done sides.

We had the chance to try the Butler’s Steak($25), of which there is a limited quantity each day. The black angus flat iron cut was cooked to a perfect medium-rare as requested. Mouth-wateringly tender and juicy, all it needed was a sprinkle of salt from the side of the plate.

Our steak experience isn’t complete without classic steak house side dishes, and the Creamed Spinach($7) here is excellent. The wilted spinach is submerged in a luscious, slightly cheesy sauce that goes equally well with the thinly sliced pieces of steak.

We also sampled 2 baos from Bao Makers. I favoured the strongly flavoured crispy Soft Shell Crab($6.8) with house blended curry mayo whilst my partner preferred the Nanban Chicken($5.5). Both proteins were fried well, with crisp batter coating juicy meat ensconced in fluffy mantou buns, although I think the chicken was taken slightly over the edge and spent 10 seconds too long in the fryer. If I were to find anything lacking, it would be for want of more of those yummy sauces as the buns can get a little dry on their own.
If you value value like I do, consider the Bao Pairing Menu, which offers you a choice of 2 baos with fries or a side salad, and a mojito of your choosing (Watermelon Lime, Lychee, Green Apple, Strawberry or Classic). And at prices starting from $22 depending on the baos you choose, it’s definitely worth getting for a full-fledged budget friendly meal with a cocktail to boot.
