When I think of The Tuckshop, I’m reminded of late nights meeting friends for drinks to recap our life musings, so I was pleasantly surprised when I heard they were serving up brunch.

Venturing out of town and taking a stroll from Dakota MRT by the side of the Geylang River (or drain—same same but different), the surroundings feel like a sleepy town with a friendly neighbourhood bar at the end of a stretch of quiet shops.

It was hard to choose just one brunch item to try, they all sounded so good from Fruits, Grains & Yoghurt to full-on meals like The Breakfast for Champions (the name says it all).

I ended up trying the Chilli Scrambled Eggs with Fresh Crab ($20) after clarifying the eggs weren’t overwhelmed by burning chilli sauce. I’m glad I opted for these delicious scrambled eggs instead of going for my usual breakfast salad or grains. I would say that this dish is a lot like a dainty, constructed brunch version of Singapore’s Chilli Crab. Although the eggs could do with a little more crab flavour, the texture of meat is nicely spread out in chunks within the eggs. No complaints about the crispy man tou, but the prize goes to the accompanying creamy corn potato cakes!

The potato cakes are a MUST TRY! I admit I didn’t read the menu clearly and thought these were along the lines of some deep fried, dry hash browns. But alas, one bite and my heart glowed a little—like a sense of ‘it was worth it to get up for a 12pm brunch session after only 4 hours of sleep’. And because I didn’t read the menu, I thought these were some magically deep fried runny egg whites… the potatoes were just that creamy! And the corn just adds enough sweetness to freshen up the potato cakes. The menu says you can order these as an extra, so do add them to your meals ($5/2 pieces). I would just order a whole plate of them the next time I visit.

Some of the other options range from European style breakfast plates, to more local asian tastes such as carrot cake & char siew bao. Everyone was pretty happy with their meals during our brunch session.

And what’s brunch without beer?

Yes! They even have Boozy Brunch Promotions, like The Tuckshop Edition beer for $8/pint or enjoy some Ca’ Foscari Prosecco Doc $8/glass.

But there’s more… they’re having a little contest to rename their The Tuckshop Edition beer! So pop in and give it a shot. It’s a lager style beer with fresh calamansi juice and hints of Gula Melaka. What would you call it?

If you pop by, check out the area next door called The Recess—a communal social and event space. They sell some creative gifts and there’s a space for a live band too. Great for private parties or corporate events.
