If you’re looking for a cosy and homely cafe that serves comforting handmade chai latte, hearty brunch, and mains, look no further than Good Chai People. As Singapore’s first chai speciality cafe, Good Chai People (GCP) highlights handmade artisanal sticky chai that pays homage to the drink’s Indian heritage but leans more towards the Australian style of preparation.

A Tasteful Design and Warm Environment

The 60-seater cafe is tastefully designed to allow customers to enjoy a comforting cup of chai in a cosy and homely space. The owner and operator, Darren Wee, a Radio DJ with Power 98FM, spent more than a year researching and learning about chai before embarking on this new project. He wanted to create a cafe space that accepts diversity, encourages conversations, and promotes inclusivity for all customers.

A Unique Sticky Chai Latte

GCP’s version of the popular sticky chai latte intentionally excludes the peppercorn spice to make it more palatable for those having their first foray into chai. Oat milk and coconut sugar are used to be more inclusive, vegan-friendly, and more considerate towards lactose-intolerant customers. The spice mix includes star anise, cloves, cardamom, cinnamon, and ginger. The term ‘sticky chai’ refers to the coconut sugar syrup hand-mixed with GCP’s blend of Ceylon OPA and spices.

A Variety of Chai Options

With 11 iterations of chai, you’ll be spoilt for choice if you’re a fan of this heavenly brew. Some of their popular options include the Sticky Chai Latte, Salted Maple Chai, Apple Cinnamon Chai, and Turmeric Chai. These options are served hot or iced and made with oat milk and coconut sugar.

Delicious Food to Accompany Your Chai

GCP also offers a variety of food options that complement the chai and coffee selections. We tried some of their popular dishes, and we highly recommend them. The Burnt Brussels Sprouts (VG) is well prepared, with just the right amount of char, and the nori and yuzu sesame drizzle adds a sweet, savoury coating to each bite. The Yuzu Salmon Open-Faced Toast is an excellent option for those who love smoked salmon with lemon cream cheese, capers, cucumber relish, dill, mixed mesclun, and toasted sourdough. The Prawn Chorizo Aglio Olio is a spicy and savoury dish with tiger prawns, chorizo, prawn head butter, garlic, chilli padi and coriander. And if you’re in the mood for something sweet, the French Toast Lovin’ (V) is a great option. It comes with brioche thick French toast, whipped cream cheese, homemade berries compote, and maple thyme drizzle.

Overall, our experience at Good Chai People was delightful. The ambience was warm and inviting, and the chai and food options were unique and flavourful. It’s no wonder that GCP has received such positive reviews online. According to a TripAdvisor review, “This place is a gem! Amazing food, great coffee, and the staff are lovely! A must-visit when in Singapore!” We couldn’t agree more. We highly recommend stopping by for a unique and comforting chai experience if you’re in the area.
